Tell Me More...
Astrantia major is the gardener's secret weapon. An invaluable plant to add texture, ground coverage and for illuminating those difficult shady spots in your garden. The dark green, palmate foliage appears in spring and is crowned from June to August by the pincushion flowers which are an exquisite white with green tips and a subtle blush pink centre. It is a delicate looking plant with taller stems, however there is no need to stake the blooms - it is sturdier than its looks.Perfect for pollinators, the bees just adore the blooms. Loved by florists too, Astrantia are excellent as cut or dried flowers in arrangements for your home. Astrantia major prefers a spot in moist, well-drained soil which benefits from dappled shade (although will tolerate full sun providing the soil is not dry). A fully hardy herbaceous perennial, the foliage dies back over winter and returns, revitalised in the spring. Reaches a height of 60-90cm with a spread of 30-60cm.
