Asclepias tuberosa gives a brilliant, lively orange haze. In spring, willowy stems produce a large cluster of bead-like buds, which open to reveal copious amounts of blazing orange, nectar-rich blooms. An impressively bright and sunny summer display which continues, successionally, from June to October. As flowers fade decorative, elongated pods follow in autumn offering extended interest. Native to North America, this perennial wildflower is often referred to as butterfly weed as it produces a high volume of nectar which butterflies and other pollinators find irresistible. Cut stems also last well in a vase, making a zingy addition to your indoor floral arrangements. Asclepias tuberosa prefers a well-drained soil of any kind except chalk based.
