Asclepias tuberosa gives a brilliant, lively orange haze. In spring, willowy stems produce a large cluster of bead-like buds, which open to reveal copious clusters of blazing orange, nectar-rich blooms, a magnet for butterflies. An impressively bright summer display continuously from June to October, decorative, elongated pods follow in autumn, which contain many long-haired seeds, and are of particular interest in the autumn. Native to North America, this perennial wildflower is often referred to as butterfly weed due to its production of copious amounts of nectar which butterflies and other pollinators find irresistible. Lasting well in a vase, the stems make a zingy addition to your indoor floral arrangements. Drought and deer resistant, and perfect for containers or borders, Asclepias tuberosa prefers to be grown in well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Reaching a height of 75-90cm and spreading up to 60cm, it is hardy down to -10°C.
