Opulent, rich purple pom poms nod atop wiry stems on Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata 'Blue Barlow' - a charming and intriguing Columbine or 'Granny's Bonnet'. Pretty scalloped foliage emerges in late winter and the blooms quickly take over from spring bulbs, flowering for several weeks from May onwards.Plant to naturalise amongst Snowdrops, Tulips, and Narcissi in borders or pots. Acid green shrubs such as Alchemilla mollis and Euphorbia make great bedfellows to help to show the deep tones off.The name Aquilegia originates from the Latin word for eagle - 'aquila' because of the claw like appearance of the petals, most prominent in single cultivars. The spurless, double 'Barlow' series are named after Emma Nora Barlow, the English botanist and geneticist, granddaughter of Charles Darwin, who first bred them.These deciduous, hardy perennials prefer a sheltered spot in part sun, part shade in moist, well-drained soil.Perfect for pollinators and great for cutting and adding to floral arrangements.
