A florist’s dream, large white flowerheads
Ammi majus ‘Queen of Africa’ is a superbly versatile annual, much loved, and often used in wedding bouquets and in RHS show gardens at Chelsea Flower Show.
Large, flattened umbels open to reveal many, lace-like, nectar-rich blooms which almost seem to airily hover on strong stems over the ferny foliage from June to September, a delight for local insects. Make sure you cut some of these dainty-looking blooms to enjoy in your home, as the stems last up to 10 days in a vase, perfect dried or dyed too.
Also known as Bishops Flower, Ammi majus is very similar in appearance to and often confused with Queen Anne’s Lace, but it is not invasive.
So easy to grow, Ammi majus ‘Queen of Africa’ prefers to be grown in well-drained soil in sun reaching a maximum height of 1.4m in maturity, spreading up to 50cm. A fully hardy annual with an RHS rating of H6, seed is easily collected to be sown the following year.
