An exciting, tall and temptingly hued red beauty which is new to the alstroemeria family. Alstroemeria 'Alara' has a name almost as pretty as the flowers themselves as it translates in many languages to mean 'red ornament', 'water fairy' or 'aquatic fairy'. It is also a popular girl's name in France, Turkey and Australia. Flowers are produced from June right through to November each year, held above lush green foliage which emerges before the blooms in March. Not only a perfect addition to your borders - alstroemeria is a great inclusion in a vase or bouquet too.A not so well-known fact is that when you pick alstroemeria for the vase you should gently pull the flowers stems from the bottom of the plant rather than cutting the with secateurs. This initiates the production of a 'wound' which promotes the production of new flowers. Use the same method to deadhead for a plentiful and continuous supply.Alstroemeria 'Alara' prefers a spot in moist, well-drained soil which benefits from either full sun or part shade. A hardy, herbaceous perennial which grows to 80cm in height with a spread of 60cm.
