In Japan, autumn is welcomed with a festival known as ‘momiji-gari’ or ‘maple tree viewing’ which celebrates Acers in all their autumnal finery. Your ‘Alluring Acer’ collection comprises; palmatum dissectum ‘Emerald Lace’ AGM – filigree-like leaves emerge as a vibrant lime green in spring and transform to lush verdant green in summer, before finally offering a blaze of fiery reds in the autumn, height and spread 4m; palmatum ‘Phoenix’ - known as the ‘Snakebark Maple’ for its silver-streaked, ruby-coloured bark, the spring foliage unfurls as a green-laced coral pink, then transforms to verdant green before a finale of blazing ambers in the autumn, height 8m, spread 4m; and palmatum ‘Iyoshi’ – palmate leaves that start off as a delicate, bright green before transitioning to deeper shades of red and purple in autumn, height 2m, spread 2.5m. The slow growth habit of Acer palmatum means they can be planted in a large container or more confined space if required. Hardy to around -20°C, they prefer a sheltered position in dappled shade, and thrive on moist, well-drained soil with a mildly acidic or neutral pH. However, if the soil is kept moist they can tolerate full sun.
