A new arrival for 2024, Allium triquetrum is an unusual looking allium which bears open, white, bell-shaped flowers suspended on multiple dainty stalks around a central strong stem up to 40cm tall. Flowers are often seen growing wild in southern Europe and are also known as triquetrous leeks because the stronger stem is a triangular shape. Blooms appear in May to July and are appreciated by bees, butterflies and other pollinators, thus adding animated interest to your garden. Beneficially drought tolerant once established, Allium triquetrum is an ideal plant for rockeries and dry gardens as well as borders or containers. However, caution is strongly advised when choosing a location for your Allium triquetrum – it is considered invasive in some countries, including the UK, and will readily spread by seed and bulbils. Whilst useful in domestic gardens, it should not be planted in any space where it can spread into the wild.Allium triquetrum prefers a spot in moist, well-drained soil of any kind which benefits from full sun or partial shade and any aspect other than north facing. As a hardy (H5), bulbous perennial it should not need additional winter protection throughout most of the UK.
