Tell Me More...
Allium schubertii or Schubert's allium is a striking ornamental onion that resembles a starburst firework captured by a camera. The flowerheads are some of the largest for an allium (30 cm diameter). The spherical orbs consist of a myriad of pink florets on different-sized stalks gently waving on top of their medium-sized green stalks. This showstopping allium is perfect to perk up the middle of your border or to create a statement by growing in a container. Allium schubertii prefers well-drained soil in a sunny spot which is preferably sheltered from strong winds. Plant this ornamental onion in autumn from September-November for an explosion of blooms from May-July. These flowers are perfect for flower arrangements and can last up to 2 weeks when cut. Clumps of alliums can be divided if they grow too big. These seed heads can be dried and sprayed silver or gold to make Christmas decorations.
