Tell Me More...
In early history, Ajuga reptans was used as an herbal remedy for wounds and nicknamed 'Carpenter's herb'. This suggests that maybe carpentry was once a rather risky profession! Your Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' gradually forms a low-growing carpet of glossy, silvery-green leaves. Uneven creamy borders and wine-red shading highlight these leaves which mature to a deep bronze in the autumn. From June to August, erect spikes of blue-purple flowers add further interest. This wildlife-resistant plant provides ground cover in a border, on a bank, or an area of the garden too shady for grass to grow. Ajuga also enhances a wildlife-friendly garden, as certain butterfly species use Ajuga reptans as a primary source of nectar. This variety thrives in a sheltered, shady or partly sunny spot with moist, well-drained soil. Your fully hardy perennial will reach a maximum height of 20cm and spread of 80cm.
