Allium will quickly introduce style and grace to your garden, adding texture, movement and dimension. Loose spheres of nectar-rich blooms almost seem to hover over the lush clumps of blue-green, strap-shaped foliage in late spring and early summer. The ‘Agile Allium’ collection comprises; ‘Mercurius’ – hemispheric clusters up to 12cm across are made up of many small lilac-purple flowers, and held on wiry stems up to 80cm tall; ‘Ampeloprasum’ – foliage lasts longer than many other of the genus and forms a fan shape, over which spherical clusters of up to 500 flowers are held on stems around 1.5m high; and stipitatum ‘Violet Beauty’ AGM – delicately aromatic flowerheads up to 10cm in diameter are held on stems around 80cm tall. Allium are a valuable addition to either traditional or modern planting schemes, often seen in RHS show gardens. Once known for their medical, culinary, and aphrodisiac qualities. Allium are both deer and rabbit resistant and look incredible when used as cut flowers, lasting well in a vase. Much loved by bees and butterflies, alliums are drought tolerant and happy even in poor soils preferring well-drained soil in sun. Hardy bulbous perennials which can be left in the ground, dying back over winter to sprout again in the spring.
