Tall and elegant, Actaea simplex ‘Brunette’, is the perfect plant for a shady spot which does not dry out. Formerly known as Cimifuga, DNA evidence in 2000 reclassified them as part of the Actaea family. Actaea simplex ‘Brunette’ is one of the best available and holds the prestigious Award of Garden for its outstanding performance in the garden.
Plants have dramatic clumps of dark ferny foliage, accentuated by tall, highly scented bottlebrush-like flowers from September to October. Blooms offer a feast for every passing butterfly and bee who seek sustenance later in the year. Attractive berries follow soon after the flowers and are loved by birds (be sure to keep them away from children though). The stems make an excellent addition to a vase which means you can enjoy the sweet scent indoors too.
Actaea simplex ‘Brunette’ reaches a mature height of approximately 1.2m, spreading to around 1m. Plants prefer to be grown in moist, but not boggy, soil which is clay or loam based. Po
