In summer, tall stems soar above attractive clumps of fine foliage. From July to October, these are packed with racemes of unusual, white, mauve-flushed blooms with vibrant blue edges. Flowers are said to be reminiscent of pixie hats, or monks' hoods, hence the common name of Monkshood. Aconitum are native to the mountains, meadowland and scrubland of Europe, North America and Asia. Once used in medicine as a pain-reliever, the stems give an unusual tone to cut flower arrangements within your home. Please note, as a precaution, wash your hands after cutting and whenever you handle these plants as all parts are toxic if ingested. Aconitum carmichaelii 'Cloudy' prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, reaching a height of 85-120cm and spreading 40-60cm. A fully hardy, herbaceous perennial with an RHS rating of H7, which dies back over winter, resprouting again in the spring.
