Acer palmatum ‘Phoenix’ provides a thrilling, kaleidoscopic colour spectacle, echoing the radiance of the firebird who gives the variety its name. The foliage unfurls as a green-laced coral pink, then transforms to verdant green before a finale of blazing ambers in the autumn. ‘Phoenix’ is also known as the ‘Snakebark Maple’ for its silver-streaked, ruby-coloured bark which further adds to the magnificent appearance. Acers are rich with symbolism in Japanese culture and feature prominently in peaceful Zen gardens. In Japan, autumn is welcomed in a festival known as ‘momiji-gari’ or ‘maple tree viewing’ which celebrates Acers in all their autumnal splendour. You too can capture this awe-inspiring beauty and sense of tranquillity in your own garden with the addition of a ‘Phoenix’. This Japanese Maple can eventually reach a height of 8m with a spread of 4m, though its slow growth habit means it can still be planted in a large container or more confined space. This Acer prefers a sheltered position in light shade and thrives on moist but well-drained soil with a mildly acidic or neutral pH. Acers are hardy with an RHS hardiness rating of H6.
