Abelia x grandiflora ‘Francis Mason’ is a perfect plant for a sunny area in your garden. Known as the ‘Glossy Abelia’ the oval, shiny, yellow-green leaves are tinted with warm red-orange shades when young. Being semi-evergreen, Abelia will keep most of its foliage over winter, a warm retreat for wildlife. Clusters of pink blush, tubular trumpet-shaped blooms, flower abundantly from midsummer into the autumn, producing a fragrance of sweet honey scent which attract butterflies. The dark calyces remain long after the petals have fallen, which further enhances the display. Abelia x grandiflora ‘Francis Mason’ thrives in borders and can be used as informal hedging and reaches a mature height of 150cm, and spreads to 200cm. Preferring to be grown in moist, well-drained soil, in a sunny aspect, a little shelter from the coldest winds is appreciated. With an RHS hardiness rating of H4, winter protection should not be required throughout most of the UK unless very cold.
