Narcissus is a genus with the Amaryllidaceae family. They are more commonly referred to as the ‘Daffodil’. They are named after the mythical Greek character Narcissus. Narcissus was said to have been granted permanent and immortal good looks by the Gods although was forbidden to admire his own reflection. He was spotted and admired by a young nymph named Echo, who fell in love instantly. Echo's advances were rejected and her heartbreak made all but her voice fade. The goddess Nemesis was outraged and lured Narcissus to a glistening lake where he was unable to resist his own reflection. As he sat admiring his reflection, he gradually started to disappear and suffered the same fate as poor Echo.
Narcissus are bulbous, herbaceous perennial plants with distinctive trumpet-shaped corona and outward spreading petals set upon strap-shaped leaves and tall, slender stems. They are symbolic to British spring weather and are produced in an array of shapes, sizes and colour. They are suitable for a range of environments such as rockeries, border edging, window boxes and spring flowering containers.
