Azalea are flowering shrubs within the genus Rhododendron in the family Ericaceae. They are native to Asia, Europe and North America. Deciduous Azaleas originate from Turkey, America and parts of Asia such as Japan and some of the first evergreen Azaleas were introduced by the plant collector E H Wilson who had selected the best 50 varieties from Japan.
Azaleas can either be evergreen or deciduous shrubs with small and often fragrant flowers that appear in spring or summer. Azalea are well suited to being used as hedging and look great in a cottage garden.
