Abeliophyllum are part of the Olive family, Oleaceae and are a close relative of the Forsythia. They originate from Central Korea and were first described by Professor Takenoshin Nakai in 1919 who collected it from the Chinsen Hills. They are renowned for their medicinal uses, offering properties that are much like witch hazel. They are popular and attractive plants that have been collected over many years. Consequently, collecting Abeliophyllum in the wild has now become illegal in Korea.
Abeliophyllum display subtle, ovate leaves that are set upon slim branches and decorated with fragrant white or pink flowers during late winter and early spring. They are best suited to wall side borders or within pots and containers.
