Description

Boasting larger blooms than her cousins, Vinca minor f.alba 'Gertrude Jekyll' is a much-loved member of the Lesser Periwinkle family. White, single, star-shaped blooms cover neat mats of ground hugging shiny foliage in spring, summer and autumn. Outstanding for injecting colour into often difficult dry areas, or planted under trees and shrubs, on banks and slopes, or trailing over the edges of containers and walls. Happy grown in coastal areas. Producing long prostrate stems, Vinca minor create dense carpets of evergreen, broad-leaved groundcover. Excellent for suppressing weeds whilst keeping the soil beneath protected from hot summer sun or excessive winter cold. The name Vinca derives from the latin word vincire which means to bind or to fetter, probably referring to the ability to hold shifting ground together using the long runners. Vinca minor f.alba 'Gertrude Jekyll' prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun, part shade or full shade. Reaching 10cm tall, she will spread to around 100cm. Classified as H6 hardiness rating, winter protection will not be required across most of the UK.
