Description

In May, from the rosettes of soft, furry, grey-green foliage, Verbascum Merlin sends up strong stately spires. Laden with outward facing buds, which break open to reveal beautiful saucer shaped flowers. Opening from the bottom buds upwards, the dusky purple-pink blooms are long lived and have a sumptuous pearlescent lustre. Creating masses of tall, eye-catching stems the flowers bloom into September offering several months of colour and a feast for visiting bees and butterflies. Folklore tells of torches made from wild Verbascum stems, dipped in tallow, which were used to repel witches. Verbascum have been known as 'the Candlewick plant', as the 'down' from the foliage was used to make wicks in lamps. Verbascum are deer, slug, and rabbit resistant, preferring to grow in poor, dry soil in sun or part shade. Reaching a mature height of 90-100cm and spreading to 45cm Verbascum Merlin is a fully hardy perennial, which will thrive outside without any winter protection.
