Description

Verbascum 'Jackie in Spots' is sister to the much-loved Verbascum 'Jackie'. Strong stems are laden with outward facing buds which break open in early summer to reveal beautiful saucer-shaped white blooms, with pretty lilac edging. Able to withstand the windiest of areas, the bottom buds open first, the upper ones following. The blooms are long-lived and have a sumptuous pearlescent lustre. Creating masses of tall eye-catching stems, the flowers bloom into September offering several months of colour, and a feast for visiting bees and butterflies. Known as Mullein, folklore tells of torches made from wild Verbascum stems dipped in tallow, which were used to repel witches. Verbascum have since been known as 'the Candlewick plant', the 'down' from the foliage was also used to make wicks in oil lamps. Verbascum 'Jackie in Spots' reaches a height of 50cm and a spread of between 30cm. Being deer, slug, and rabbit resistant, she prefers to grow in poor dry soil, in sun or part shade. A fully hardy perennial, Verbascum thrive outside in most of the UK without any winter protection.
