Description

This smaller hybrid tulip got its unusual name from the striped sticks of rock which are reminiscent of seaside holidays. The petals are striped deep pink and white once the deep, red-pink buds unfold. When fully open they are star-shaped blooms with white centres and stripy outer petals. These little tulips are a sight to behold when they flower in March-April. Furthermore, they are slightly shorter than many other tulips (at only 30 cm high) so adapt well to being a lower tier of tulip planting for either matching or contrasting bulbs above. For year-on-year flowering plant them in Autumn/Winter in a moist but well drained soil with a sunny position. Once they have flowered allow the leaves to die back prior to tidying up as this will restore nutrients to the bulb ready for the following Spring.

How hardy are your plants?

All plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

FH - Fully hardy - will withstand temperatures down to -15 C (5F) and often lower.
H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
ST Sub Tropical are happy in temperatures between 10-15 C (50 59 F)
TR Tropical can withstand temperatures above 15 C (59 F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
