Tulips are a genus within the Liliaceae family, native to North Africa, Northwest China, Greece, Turkey, Iran and Mongolia. The word Tulip is thought to have derived from the Persian word for Turban, due to the shape of the Tulip bloom. Tulips are synonymous to the Dutch and are widely grown and loved throughout Holland. However, Tulips were only first introduced to Europe during the second half of the 16th century. They were originally a fashionable and curious bloom for the rich and were the ultimate symbol of wealth. For those who could not afford to buy Tulips, attention would be drawn to art, tapestries and pottery which featured the blooms. Single Tulip bulbs were often sold for the same price that could have been purchased for a house in Amsterdam at the time. This period was known as Tulipomania (1636-1637).
Tulips are bulbous perennial plants that will often epitomize the spring season. For many of us, a spring garden would not be complete without the implementation of our beloved Tulips. Tulips are produced in a wide range of forms and colours to create the most dramatic scene.
