Description
Resembling a petite, paler agapanthus, Tulbaghia hybrida 'Kilimanjaro' packs a punch despite its apparent delicacy. Also known as 'society garlic', all parts of the plant are edible with a pleasing garlic flavour, both leaves and dainty flowers make the perfect garnish for savouries and salads. Blooms are borne throughout the summer months and often well into autumn, reaching up to 50cm tall. Tulbaghia hybrida 'Kilimanjaro' is ideal for edging a border or for rockeries, as well as making an excellent cut flower. 'Kilimanjaro' will happily establish itself in a container as long as it is sheltered from strong winds - making winter protection more straightforward. Also notable for its antibacterial and antifungal properties it is, consequently, an exceptional companion plant to roses and other plants which are prone to fungal disease. Prefers a sunny site with free-draining soil and any aspect other than north facing. A half-hardy (RHS H3) perennial so provide some protection over winter.
