The airy plumes of Tamarix africana give feathery height as the pale pink and white blooms cover the contrasting dark branches - creating a magical canopy of wispy racemes. A versatile variety which will compliment your garden, the effortless beauty is something to be admired. Tamarix are both vibrant and versatile, even for a coastal garden, hence the common name Salt Cedar, as they are not troubled by saline. Perfect for inland urban and country gardens, Tamarix copes well with pollution, work well as a wind break and are deer resistant. With a long tap root, Tamarix are also drought tolerant. Slender, dark, arching branches hold many small, nectar-rich blooms in summer and early autumn, creating elegant fluffy racemes. This effect is much loved by our pollinating friends and the deciduous needle-like foliage perfectly compliment the look. Originating from south-eastern Europe and Asia, the wood was once used to make powerful longbows. Tamarix are mentioned several times in the bible. Wedgwood created a design for their pottery called Tamarix. Tamarix prefer to be grown in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Reaching heights and spreads of up to 4-8m, they are fully hardy perennials requiring no winter protection.
