Description

Originating from Chile and Peru, Solanum is a huge and diverse family, which includes potatoes, tomatoes and belladonna (deadly nightshade). Fast-growing, semi-evergreen climbers which scramble and climb to add height to a garden without taking up too much room. Five petalled blooms with prominent yellow centres and sweet fragrance are held in clusters on twining stems from mid-summer and well into autumn. Looking a little like the blooms on a potato plant, which explains the common name Potato Vine. Inedible berries follow in autumn. This collection comprises three varieties - Solanum jasminoides Album and Solanum crispum Glasnevin (which have both been given the Royal Horticultural Society's prestigious Award of Garden Merit for outstanding performance in the garden), with Solanum jasminoides Blue completing the trio. Solanum prefer to be grown in well-drained soil in sun. Hardy to -10 C, requiring some protection from frost in exceptionally cold winters.
