The name may suggest a Peruvian heritage, but stunning Scilla peruviana is a Mediterranean beauty. It is thought that the bulbs first arrived in the UK on a ship named 'Peru', and the botanist Carolus Clusius mistakenly took the name of the ship as the country of origin. Also known as the Portuguese squill, or Cuban lily, Scilla peruviana produces clusters of striking lavender-blue star-shaped blooms on stems up to 40cm tall in May. The buds begin as a saturated, almost navy violet before revealing their stellate blooms, arranged in a cone shape.Plant your bulbs in autumn on moist, well-drained soil at a depth of 8cm. Fabulous planted in groups or drifts in a sunny border, the vibrant blue flowers also look great in terracotta pots to fill the May gap and mark the beginning of warmer days and evenings.

All plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

FH - Fully hardy - will withstand temperatures down to -15 C (5F) and often lower.
H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
ST Sub Tropical are happy in temperatures between 10-15 C (50 59 F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
