Scilla peruviana Alba

Distinctive, fragrant, rich indigo blooms Also known as the Portuguese squill, Scilla peruviana bears huge, dramatic flower heads of starry, crips white flowers from April to June. The foliage is very nearly evergreen; the rosette of fleshy, narrow, deep green leaves emerges in autumn, only dying back for a brief period of dormancy in late summer. Ideal for bridging the gap between spring and summer, Scilla peruviana can dotted throughout the front of a border or grown as part of a container display. While the name may suggest a Peruvian heritage, Scilla peruviana Alba is actually native to the Mediterranean. It is thought that the bulbs first arrived in the UK on a ship named 'Peru', the name mistakenly taken as the country of origin. Scilla peruviana Alba prefers to be grown in gritty, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. With a mature height of 30cm, and each bulb spreading to 10cm, it is hardy to around -10 C, with an RHS rating of H4, so some winter protection may be required in cooler regions.
