A member of the bluebell family, Scilla peruviana alba is a rare and unusual beauty for your early summer garden.Clusters of star-shaped white blooms flower on stems up to 25cm tall in May and June. The buds emerge in spring, striped and tightly packed, before springing open to reveal the twinkling blooms arranged in a beautiful cone shape from the outside in.The name might suggest a Peruvian heritage, but stunning Scilla peruviana is a Mediterranean beauty. It is thought that the bulbs first arrived in the UK on a ship named 'Peru', and the botanist Carolus Clusius mistakenly took the name of the ship as the country of origin.Plant your bulbs in autumn on moist, well-drained soil at a depth of 10cm. Fabulous planted in groups or drifts in a sunny border. The intriguing flowers also look great in patio pots to fill the May gap and mark the beginning of brighter days and warmer evenings.
