Description

Camellias are usually thought of as spring flowering, yet you can now enjoy the classic beauty of large camellia blooms in the autumn, winter and spring. Arriving fashionably late in the gardening year, camellias are a sight to behold in the darker, colder months. Camellias are evergreen, popular with florists both for the glossy foliage and the flowers which are excellent in floral arrangements to bring colour and fragrance into your home. Camellia blooms represent adoration and loveliness in the language of flowers. Originating from acidic soil areas of Eastern Asia, India, the Himalayas and parts of China, camellia belong to the Theaceae family, and are a cousin of the tea plant. Camellias prefer to be grown in moist, acidic well-drained soil in part shade; a slightly sheltered spot would help to protect the buds from damage by cold winds. A fully hardy plant to minus 10 , surviving outside in most of the UK with no frost protection.
