Description

Plump robust spires protrude from vigorous aromatic foliage Salvia nemorosa is a woodland wonder which grows naturally in Central Europe and Western Asia. The word salvia was derived from the Latin verb for wellness or health as the ancient world used the plant for medicinal purposes. Salvia also came to mean sage and the herb-scented leaves on your Salvia nemorosa 'Sensation Deep Rose' will quickly explain why. These fragrant leaves are deciduous and form a bushy clump where they emerge in March. Grey-green, wrinkly foliage is topped by a prolific display of chunky spires from June to August. Each deep purple spike on your plant is smothered with tiny, rose-pink blooms which offer a sensational show of colour. Flower arrangements are also infused with rich, rosy colour when you take cutting from your plant. This compact plant makes a charming addition to your border, rockery or patio container. A cottage-style or informal garden is also a superb setting for your salvia. While deer-resistant, your Salvia nemorosa 'Sensation Deep Rose' acts as a lure for bees and butterflies and increases the appeal of any wildlife garden. Your drought-tolerant variety can be planted at any time of year. Chalky, loamy or sandy soil which is moist, yet well-drained is ideal. A sunny or partly sunny location with a south, west or east-facing aspect also best suits your fully hardy perennial. Removing spent flower spikes from your plant is a good way to encourage your salvia to bloom again. Your plant also benefits from being cut back after the flowering season is over. In 2-5 years, your 'Sensation Deep Rose' reaches a height and spread of 30cm by 40cm.
