Description

There are said to be more than 900 species of Salvia, originating in the rock soils of Mexico, which explains their love for sunshine. The name Salvia is derived from the Latin 'salvere' meaning 'to save' as it has been used medicinally for centuries. An abundance of beautiful, open-mouthed blooms adorn wiry stems above the sage scented foliage often from late spring through summer and into the autumn, offering fine cuisine for passing bees and butterflies. Perfect for planting near a path or seat where the fragrance will be released when the foliage is brushed past. Salvias prefer well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Hardy perennials. A member of the sage family, Salvia are drought tolerant and deer resistant, preferring to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun or part shade. Most are hardy, herbaceous perennials and thrive outside all year round, becoming dormant over winter to sprout again in the spring.
