Description

The quintessential English Oak, Quercus robur is the much lesser-known Latin name What could be mightier than the national tree of England? Quercus Robur, or the Old English Oak, strikes a magnificent silhouette, with its broad boughs, green-lobed deciduous foliage, and distinctive acorns. In Elizabethan times most of England was covered by this magnificent tree, however the use of the wood from then onwards, for ships, homes, frames for aircraft, chassis for cars led to the decimation of this wonderful tree. Planting a tree such as this is a symbol of hope for the future - Oak trees can live for 1,000 years and will endure for many generations. Eventually towering and spreading to over 20m, the English Oak is vital to the environment. Birds make their nests among the branches, spring catkins buzz with pollinators, acorns provide sustenance, and fallen leaves offer a winter habitat for all sorts of wildlife. Oak trees thrive on any moist, well-drained soil, in full sun or part shade, and are reliably hardy, even in exposed positions
