Description

Phlox subulata Oakington Blue Eyes, has a common name of Moss Phlox because of the beautiful fine foliage. This Phlox is one of the most colourful Spring groundcover plants as lilac-blue blooms with dark centres cover the dense, evergreen, weed-suppressing cushions. Known also as Creeping Phlox because of the low, ground hugging habit, Oakington Blue Eyes is the perfect plant to grow between paths and patios, at the front of a border, in a rock or gravel garden, or tumbling beautifully from a container. Popular in Japan, where colourful meadows of Phlox subulata has instigated the Fuji Shibazakua Festival, held each year between mid-April and early June, where visitors celebrate the sheer beauty. Phlox subulata are deer resistant, drought tolerant, attractive to butterflies and happy in sandy soils, perfect for planting in coastal conditions. Growing to a height of approximately 15cm and spreading to around 60cm, Phlox subulata are not fussy on soil conditions in either sun or part shade. Being fully hardy perennials; you will enjoy them for years to come without the need for any protection over winter.
