Brightly coloured and very versatile, Persicaria are long flowering and eye-catching. Long, slender, wiry stems hold a plethora of small, dusky, blood-red blooms creating poker-like flowerheads from June to October. The flowers held above carpets of low, leafy, heart-shaped foliage which make excellent weed-suppressing groundcover. In autumn, the green foliage gains golden yellow tints. Commonly known as Mountain Fleece, Persicaria are native to the Himalayas but found almost everywhere. Unlike their distant cousin that grows wild, newer varieties are much better behaved. Much loved by our pollinating friends, the blooms are excellent when cut for your home lasting well in a vase. Persicaria are deer and rabbit resistant, preferring to be grown in moist soil in sun or part shade. Being fully hardy perennials, Persicaria will flourish outside all year round with no extra winter protection required; dying back over winter to sprout again in spring.

All plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

FH - Fully hardy - will withstand temperatures down to -15 C (5F) and often lower.
H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
ST Sub Tropical are happy in temperatures between 10-15 C (50 59 F)
TR Tropical can withstand temperatures above 15 C (59 F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
