Description
Outgoing and vivacious, Penstemon 'Maurice Gibbs' produces an abundance of large, red-purple, bell-shaped blooms on many wiry stems from May to October, and often longer. Easy to grow, happy in either borders or containers, not fussy on soil conditions and happy in sun or part shade. Once established Penstemon are semi-evergreen, oblivious to both drought and rain, resistant to slugs and snails, and loved by our friendly pollinators who will come visiting for a feast. Penstemon 'Maurice Gibbs' has been given the Award of Garden Merit for outstanding performance in the garden. Native to North America and East Asia, Penstemon are also known as Beardtongue because the protruding pollen-free stamen resembles a bearded iris. One of the most valuable plants for late summer and autumn colour, thriving in most soil conditions they are very easy to propagate and raise new plants. Growing to a height of 80cm and spreading to between 45-60cm, Penstemon 'Maurice Gibbs' has an RHS hardiness rating of H3, meaning hardy to -5 C, so would appreciate the protection of a sheltered spot in your garden. Or you could grow in a pot which can be moved to a sheltered area.
