Description
Parahebe seem to have boundless energy, flowering relentlessly over evergreen foliage producing an abundance of saucer-shaped blooms on arching spires. Closely related to Veronica and Hebe, hence the name, they are more delicate in appearance and originate from the dry, sunny areas of Australasia. Looking rather like a miniature Eucalyptus, with blue-grey perfoliate, stemless leaves, Parahebe create wonderful weed-suppressing mats, spreading by wiry stems, and the similarity with Eucalyptus ends once the small flowers start to appear on spires at the end of each stem. With a rather casual habit, Parahebe are happy in poor soil. All summer, erect racemes of saucer-shaped blooms smother the compact, creeping, evergreen foliage. Parahebe are named because of their similarities to hebes and give great weed-suppressing groundcover. Parahebe prefer to be grown in dry, well-drained soil in sun or part shade and a fully hardy perennials, meaning they can be grown outside to enjoy for years to come without any winter protection.
