Description

Papaver have long been prized for their huge flamboyant blooms and the striking Papaver orientale Picotee takes this one stage further. Colossal, bowl-shaped blooms with white petals, each with a broad, pink-orange ruffled edge, wave on strong hairy stems in late spring and early summer. Looking as if they were created using crepe-paper, the crinkled petals add texture and are adored by florists, lasting well in a vase. Held above tidy clumps of furry foliage, the seed heads add architectural interest if left on the plant to dry, and look wonderful cut for autumnal dried arrangements. The ever-popular Papaver orientale have long been thought of as the Queen of the Early Summer Border. The rough, bristly foliage is dormant by mid-summer and dies back completely, giving plenty of room for later flowering perennials, re-emerging in autumn. Native to eastern Turkey, inhabiting alpine areas, Papaver orientale was introduced to western Europe in the 1700's, and has risen in popularity with more new cultivars introduced following intensive breeding. Papaver orientale Eyecatcher is rabbit, slug, and deer resistant, preferring to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in full sun. In maturity, she will reach a height 70cm and a spread of 60cm. A fully hardy perennial she requires no winter protection.
