They trace their roots back to the late 1940s when Japanese nurseryman, Toichi Itoh succeeded in crossing a hybrid tree peony with an herbaceous peony. The resultant plants were further developed by an American horticulturalist in the 1960s and have been much sought after since. Plants are domed in shape, akin to a tree peony, yet become dormant over autumn and winter, like an herbaceous peony. Flowering commences in the first or second year continues for decades.Plant Paeonia Itoh 'Pastel Splendour' in moist, well-drained soil which benefits from full sun or partial shade. A hardy, herbaceous perennial which reaches a height of 90cm and spread of 50cm and does not require winter protection throughout most of the UK.
