Paeonia Itoh Border Charm

About as reflective and resplendent as the come in the peony world. Paeonia Itoh 'Border Charm' entrances you with its large, lightly scented, semi-double yellow flowers in May and June each year. Flowers are accented by deep red flares which explode from the centre - giving it stratospheric appeal in containers, open-ground or in your home, when cut for the vase. Not only are these flowers alluring to passers-by - pollinators also love them and will pop in for a feast. This rare, exciting and unusual perennial traces its roots back to a variety developed in the late 1940s by Japanese nurseryman, Toichi Itoh. He was the first to succeed in crossing a hybrid tree peony with an herbaceous peony and the resultant plants were further developed by an American horticulturalist in the 1960s. Plants have a domed shape, akin to a tree peony yet become dormant over autumn and winter, like an herbaceous peony. Flowering commences in the first or second year and continues for decades. Plant Paeonia Itoh 'Border Charm' in moist, well-drained soil which benefits from full sun or partial shade. A hardy, herbaceous perennial which reaches a height and spread of 80cm and does not require winter protection throughout most of the UK.
