Nerine is a genus of plants within the Amaryllidoideae family, native to South Africa. They are commonly known as the ‘spider lily’, ‘jersey lily’ or ‘Guernsey lily’. It was first described in 1635 by Jacques-Philippe Cornut, a French botanist under the Imhofia. It was later named Nerine and was first described under this title by British botanist, William Herbert in 1820. He alluded to the story of how Nerine’s were discovered in Britain. It is known that a ship carrying boxes of Nerine bulbs, destined for the Netherlands was shipwrecked on Guernsey. Once washed up on the island they were soon dispersed and established in the UK.
Nerine are perennial bulbs with stately, upright stems, grass-like foliage and striking sprays of lily-like flowers that curl and curve into attractive formations throughout autumn.
