History and Origin:

Amaryllis is part of the sub-family Amaryllidinae forming part of the Amaryllidaceae family, native to South Africa. It is a flowering bulb, native to South America and the Caribbean. The name Amaryllis is taken from the Greek word ‘amarysso’ meaning ‘to sparkle’ and ‘amarella’ to describe the bitterness of the bulb.

Amaryllis are tender, deciduous bulbs with thick strap-shaped leaves and stunning trumpet-shaped flowers that form a dramatic display from winter to early spring. They are best suited to pots and containers.
