Description

Magical Monarda Collection (Bergamot) Funky flowers with nectar rich centres A relative of the mint family, this deciduous, hardy perennial will captivate you with its funky flowers (reminiscent of a punk-rocker's spiky hair). This, coupled with the vibrant green foliage which releases and intense and appealing scent when brushed, make the Magical Monarda Collection a must have for both traditional and modern gardens. It would even fit well in the kitchen garden as it makes a great tisane (or herbal tea) too. Monarda didyma are a clump forming plants which emerge in spring and last through to mid-autumn. Much loved by bees, their other common name is Beebalm and the flowers these pollinators adore appear in June, lasting collectively for up to 4 months. Dead heading flowers once they are spent will encourage further blooms to emerge for maximum impact. All of the varieties in the collection prefer a moist, well-drained soil with any aspect other than north-facing. Monarda didyma is ideally planted between May and September in a spot where it can benefit from full sun or part shade. As a hardy plant (H4) it requires little or no winter protection and is easily propagated by division in spring (once mature clumps have been formed). Collection comprises: Monarda 'Beauty Cobham' has icy-pink flowers and reaches a height of 90cm with a 60cm spread; Monarda 'Cambridge Scarlet' has rich, scarlet-pink flowers and reaches a height of 90cm with a spread of 45cm; Monarda 'Pink Lace' has deep pink blooms and reaches a height of 45cm with a spread of 60cm; Monarda 'Prairie Night' has purple-pink flowers and reaches a height and spread of 1.2m x 75cm; and Monarda 'Snow White' has white blooms and will achieve a heigh of 90cm with a 60cm spread.
