Description

A tall and elegant cousin to the much-loved snowdrop - Leucojum aestivium Gravetye Giant are a welcome sight in the early spring garden. Often known as the summer snowflake, the green-tipped bells of Leucojum's bloom just slightly later than snowdrops, their flowering period usually overlapping harmoniously. The cultivar name of this Leucojum honours Gravetye Manor, once the Sussex home of horticulturist and garden writer William Robinson which is one of the most important historic gardens in England.Adored by bees for their pollen and nectar-rich centres, snowflakes also make excellent cut flowers - the 40cm long stems of nodding bells lasting up to 5 days in the vase.Plant bulbs in autumn, 10cm deep on moist well-drained soil, though the bulbs have been known to survive the wettest of soils and winters and will naturalise well.Leucojum aestivium Gravetye Giant look lovely planted alongside other spring flowering bulbs such as narcissi and early tulips.
