Description

Recognised by the large bracts which seem to wave to passing insects, Lavandula stoechas are also known as French Lavender, Spanish Lavender, and Butterfly Lavender. Neat compact mounds of green-grey foliage release the iconic lavender scent every time it is disturbed or brushed against. An evergreen beauty, short wiry stems hold the distinctive flowerheads above the foliage from late spring through the summer. Bees and butterflies will come visiting to partake of the nectar-rich feast. Originating from the Mediterranean, Lavenders have long been renowned for their therapeutic qualities. The oil has been used for centuries in cosmetics and fragrances, with antiseptic and anti-inflammatory benefits. Wonderful for your garden where slugs will leave alone, and for floral arrangements for your home. To help you relax, perhaps add a sprig to your bath. Lavandula stoechas prefer to be grown in well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Hardy in most of the UK, with an RHS hardiness rating of H4, they may require some frost protection if the temperature drops to around -10 C.
