The perfect, quick-growing ornamental tree for a small-medium garden, Laburnum anagyroides is a sight to behold on a spring day. Clusters of vivid-yellow, sweetly scented blooms cascade in abundance from branches, the long racemes reaching up to around 45cm, sometimes longer, in spring and early summer, hence the common name 'Golden Rain', and look truly spectacular whether in flower or not, thanks to the pretty, cut foliage. Many stately homes plant them either side of an arch, where the blooms drip down, creating a colourful, perfumed walkway in May and June. The silvery-black, pea-like seedpods which follow are poisonous, so remove any low hanging branches out of the reach of children.Beautiful grown as a deciduous specimen tree or trained against a wall, Laburnum anagyroides grows to an approximate height of 4-8m and can easily be pruned to a manageable size and shape if required.Laburnum anagyroides is a fully hardy perennial, preferring moist, well-drained soil in sun. It does not required any winter protection.
