Beautiful and unique, a reblooming heritage variety, Iris germanica Wine and Roses is aptly named boasting large, flamboyant blooms. In a class of its own, displaying clear rose-pink standards with violet-purple falls that are edged in rose pink. Exotic and elegant, the orchid-like blooms are adorned by a red-orange beard. Flowering in late spring and early summer, then again in autumn, over clumps of attractive architectural sword-shaped foliage. Iris germanica are the classic of the border. Also known as Bearded Iris, explained by the large and colourful 'lip' which hangs from the flower like a beard. The beard has evolved to help and guide our pollinating friends to the pollen held in the centre. Excellent as cut flowers for your home and lasting well in a vase, Iris germanica Wine and Roses is also terrific for naturalising. Drought tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant, Wine and Roses will grow happily in borders and containers, reaching a mature height of between 70-90cm and spreading 50cm. The fleshy rhizomes form an impressive clump which sit just proud of the soil. Iris germanica prefer to be grown in well-drained soil in a sunny spot.
