Description

Holly Blue Prince is a male holly. Male hollies are compact, evergreen and produce a dazzling display of summer flowers. Protruding out of these flowers, Blue Prince extends four pollen filled stamens. If you were a butterfly or bee, you would see these stamens waving to you, beckoning you to 'come over here'. This availability of pollen makes male hollies such an attraction for pollinators to visit your garden. They are just too alluring to resist. Due to its relative neatness, Blue Prince is ideal for a patio, container, or small garden. Hollies are evergreen, yet when we have one of those prolonged ice-cold spells in the winter, Blue Prince releases an anthocyanin to protect itself from the cold. Anthocyanin is the same chemical which makes Blueberries blue, and results in Blue Prince literally turning blue with the cold! A very intriguing plant.

All plants have a guideline temperature for how well they will tolerate winter cold.

FH - Fully hardy - will withstand temperatures down to -15 C (5F) and often lower.
H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
ST Sub Tropical are happy in temperatures between 10-15 C (50 59 F)
TR Tropical can withstand temperatures above 15 C (59 F)

Please remember that temperatures can vary significantly within quite a small area, and hardiness can be affected by soil, position and other factors.
