Description
The native bluebell, Hyacinthoides non-scripta are the quintessential sign of a British spring; when bluebells are in flower, spring has most definitely arrived, and summer is just around the corner.Do not think of your shady woodland gardens as difficult, brighten up dark corners with beautiful spring flowering bulbs. Bluebells are deer and rabbit resistant, and these vigorous plants are perfect for creating carpets of blooms, where their classic colour will make an incredible impact and gently scent the spring air. Plant your bulbs in September or October on well-drained, moist soil at a depth of 10cm for flowering next April to May.The graceful, arching stems will reach up to 25cm each, bending at the top where several single bells of sweetly scented violet-blue flowers dangle gently. Bluebell plants spread up to just 8cm each and will weave and naturalise easily amongst other spring bulbs in an informal woodland planting scheme.
