Description

Holboellia traversii, a wonderful talking point with sizzling, elongated fruit in late summer. An incredible, vigorous, evergreen climber with twining stems, gives your garden year-round interest. The attractive evergreen foliage is tinged purple-bronze when young, maturing to dark green. In May, unusual, dangling flowers hang in tightly packed clusters The blooms appear in two different colours on the same plant, depending on whether they are male which are usually green-white or female usually red-purple. Both emit a delicate fragrance. Intriguing pink-purple, elongated, sausage-shaped fruits follow in autumn, hence the common name the Broad-Leaved Sausage Vine. The fruit can apparently be eaten when cooked, but with an unpleasant, bitter taste we would not recommend it. Holboellia traversii prefers to be grown in well-drained soil, in a sunny spot, where it will climb up a wall reading a height of 2-3m and spread of 1m. A hardy perennial that requires no frost protection in most of the UK.
